Community Service
GIVING BACK Since 1912
Investing in the communities we serve, both professionally and personally, has been a hallmark of Smith Anderson since our founding in 1912. Our attorneys and professionals serve in leadership roles with civic, charitable, philanthropic, and industry organizations locally, across North Carolina, and nationally. Each year, the firm also supports more than 80 nonprofits and industry groups and sponsors more than 100 events, while contributing time, resources, and legal knowledge to organizations and initiatives that strengthen our communities.
Pro Bono
Smith Anderson fosters a culture that supports and encourages advocacy on behalf of those with limited means. Our attorneys spend thousands of collective pro bono hours each year counseling pro bono clients on a wide range of pressing legal issues. Examples include advocating for abused and neglected children by supporting Guardian ad Litem appeals; helping individuals navigate complex systems to restore their drivers’ license or seek expunctions that are allowed by law; assisting disabled veterans secure their legal rights; and representing nonprofits to resolve legal issues that would otherwise drain funds from the communities they serve.
The firm has adopted a formal Pro Bono Legal Services Policy and established a Pro Bono Committee to guide, encourage, and facilitate pro bono engagement across the firm. The committee helps identify meaningful opportunities, supports attorneys taking on matters, and promotes collaboration, supervision, and training.
To mark our firm's centennial, we committed $100,000 to Legal Aid of North Carolina, a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal advice to low-income individuals. More recently, in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Smith Anderson Community Fund, the firm contributed an additional $50,000 to Legal Aid during a period of significant funding uncertainty for civil legal service providers.
Smith Anderson Community Fund
Through our charitable arm, administered by the Triangle Community Foundation, the Smith Anderson Community Fund provides financial assistance to organizations that support underprivileged individuals, children and families in need of food, medical aid, housing, education, and similar essential services.
