Triangle Business Journal has named Smith Anderson partner and Firm Chair Gerald Roach a 2026 Corporate Leadership Award honoree, recognizing his longstanding leadership at the firm, service to clients, and impact across the Triangle and North Carolina.

The Corporate Leadership Awards recognize C-level executives and business leaders who are helping drive the growth and success of their organizations while making meaningful contributions to their communities. Gerald exemplifies that leadership through more than 25 years of helping lead Smith Anderson and strengthen its position as one of the Southeast’s premier business law firms, advancing strategic growth and attracting exceptional talent along the way. His leadership at the firm has included service as chair of the firm’s Management Committee, Managing Partner, and now Firm Chair, while he also mentors lawyers and helps position the firm to deliver exceptional client service for the long term.

His leadership has coincided with a period of significant growth for the firm. In his Triangle Business Journal profile, Gerald pointed to helping guide Smith Anderson through continued expansion and high-impact client work, noting that the firm has more than doubled its revenue since his tenure as Managing Partner.

Gerald also maintains an active corporate practice, advising companies and their executives through transformational business matters, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, public company matters, family and founder-owned businesses, strategic transactions, and other significant business opportunities and challenges. Gerald’s impact is seen in the strength of the firm’s longstanding client relationships, the caliber of its corporate work, and the leadership values he has helped cultivate with business leaders as they navigate pivotal moments for their organizations.

His work has earned recognition from several leading legal directories. Chambers USA, the gold standard in the legal credentialing industry, recognizes Gerald as an Eminent Practitioner in Corporate/M&A in North Carolina, while IFLR1000 recognizes him as Highly Regarded for his work in M&A. He has also earned recognition from The Best Lawyers in America® for his corporate and transactional practice.

Beyond Smith Anderson, Gerald’s civic involvement reflects his commitment to higher education, health care, economic development, the legal profession, and the broader North Carolina business community, including significant leadership roles. He is former chair of the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees and currently chairs its Special Advisory Committee on Government Affairs. Gerald also served as chair of Gov. Josh Stein’s bipartisan Commerce Transition Committee and is an elder at White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Reflecting on his approach to leadership, Gerald emphasized the importance of relationships, listening, and helping others succeed, principles that have shaped both his work with clients and his leadership at Smith Anderson.
