Smith Anderson Managing Partner Byron Kirkland has been named a 2026 Community Champion by Triangle Business Journal, one of only five individuals honored in the Corporate Leadership category. With more than 39 years of experience advising companies on complex business and transactional matters, Byron was recognized for his longstanding commitment to strengthening the Triangle through civic service and community engagement within the firm.

The annual Community Champion Awards recognize individuals and businesses making a meaningful impact through community outreach and engagement within their organizations.

For Byron, community-building begins with relationships and the belief that leadership carries responsibilities beyond an organization’s walls. Throughout his career, he has served in leadership roles with United Way of the Greater Triangle, The Miracle League of the Triangle, the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, NC TECH, and the Center for Entrepreneurial Development, in addition to national and statewide legal organizations. He has previously served as board chair of both United Way of the Greater Triangle and The Miracle League of the Triangle.

That commitment has also shaped his leadership at Smith Anderson. Since becoming managing partner in 2020, Byron has launched the firm’s annual Week of Service, which provides attorneys and business professionals paid time to volunteer with nonprofit organizations, and established a firmwide nonprofit repository to help colleagues discover organizations and volunteer opportunities. That culture of Giving Back was especially evident during the 20th anniversary of the Smith Anderson Community Fund, when colleagues and alumni contributed more than $120,000, exceeding the campaign’s $100,000 goal. The Fund supports organizations helping individuals, children, and families meet needs such as food, medical care, housing, education, and legal services, and the anniversary campaign included a $50,000 contribution to Legal Aid of North Carolina. Most recently, the firm doubled down on its commitment to pro bono service by adopting internal initiatives designed to further encourage and facilitate pro bono service.

Byron sees that momentum continuing through the next generation of leaders. “I am optimistic about the next generation of leaders I see stepping forward, both at Smith Anderson and throughout the Triangle,” Byron said. “There is a real interest in pairing professional success with time devoted to community involvement that reflects personal interests.”

In addition to serving as Smith Anderson’s Managing Partner, Byron is a member of the firm’s Management Committee and continues to maintain an active practice advising companies and investors on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, venture capital, securities, and other business matters.
