A past President of the North Carolina State Bar, Jim Dorsett practices in the areas of commercial litigation, products liability, and tort and insurance litigation. His work includes the representation of corporations and individuals in contract and shareholder suits, claims related to decedents' estates, including will caveats, legal malpractice cases, and the defense of manufacturers in products liability cases in the state and federal courts. Jim also represents property owners in appeals from excessive tax valuations. He has appeared on behalf of air carriers and their insurers in accident and other lawsuits. A certified mediator, his work extends to alternative dispute resolution and counseling. He has successfully defended a variety of negligence actions, and has obtained substantial awards on behalf of plaintiffs in meritorious personal injury and wrongful death claims.

Jim remains active in professional and volunteer activities and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Barristers Foundation, the North Carolina State Bar Council’s Client Security Fund Board of Trustees and the American Counsel Association, for which he previously served as President. He currently serves as President of the Board of Governors of City Club Raleigh, and on the Board of Visitors of Davidson College. He has also served as President of Food Runners Collaborative, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, and on the boards of other charitable organizations. He is Past President of the American Board of Trial Advocates, Eastern North Carolina Chapter.

  • Obtained $5 million award for maker of in ovo poultry inoculation system in breach of contract action against international conglomerate.

  • Assisted national bank in achieving seven figure reduction in real property taxation.
