Smith Anderson Recognized as One of Three 2025 Regional Powerhouses by Law360
Law360 has recognized Smith Anderson as a 2025 North Carolina Regional Powerhouse for the second consecutive year, one of only three firms in the state to receive this honor. In a feature article, Law360 highlighted the firm’s transactional and litigation successes, its deep connections to the state, including the world-renowned Research Triangle region and its long-standing commitment to community service.
The profile noted Smith Anderson’s work guiding client Fortrea through its $340 million sale of its enabling services segment, shortly after Fortrea’s spinoff from global life sciences company, Labcorp. The article also spotlighted the firm’s representation of Smithfield Foods and subsidiary Murphy-Brown in a major insurance coverage settlement, as well as precedent-setting litigation on behalf of Schooldev East before the North Carolina Supreme Court.
“The Research Triangle is a growing, sophisticated business community. Our firm continues to be the largest law firm in this area, and we’ve worked hard to recruit talented people and build a reputation,” said Michael W. Mitchell, co-chair of Smith Anderson’s Litigation practice.
Other firm leaders also shared their perspectives with Law360, including Amy Batten, chair of the firm’s Management Committee and co-chair of the Corporate and Transactional practice, who discussed advising Fortrea during a period of rapid transition, and Dana E. Simpson, chair of the Regulatory and Public Policy practice, who reflected on the state’s economic transformation and the firm’s role in helping businesses navigate it.
The profile further emphasized Smith Anderson’s growth in litigation, including a 30% revenue increase in the past year, its long-standing presence in downtown Raleigh and its strong culture of service. Law360 noted the firm’s deep roots in the local community, including leadership roles with universities and the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, as well as its annual firmwide week of service.
“Given the growth we’ve had over the last 25 years, I’m excited to see what the next five to 10 years has in store for us,” Simpson said. “I think we’re well-positioned to continue to be trusted advisers to those businesses and leaders that are hoping to grow.”
