Smith Anderson Highlights Culture of Service With $50,000 Gift to Legal Aid of North Carolina

Smith Anderson welcomed its 2026 Summer Associate class during a firmwide event, presenting $50,000 to Legal Aid of North Carolina and reaffirming the firm’s longstanding commitment to service, community engagement, charitable giving, and pro bono work.

The gift was made through the Smith Anderson Community Fund in support of Legal Aid’s mission to provide legal assistance to people across the state who need it most. Legal Aid of North Carolina has been a recipient of the Smith Anderson Community Fund since 2007. The presentation comes during a milestone year for the Smith Anderson Community Fund, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This year, the fund raised more than $120,000 through the collective generosity of Smith Anderson colleagues and alumni. Administered by the Triangle Community Foundation, the fund provides financial assistance to organizations that support underprivileged individuals, children, and families in need of food, medical aid, housing, and education, and similar essential services.

"For two decades, the Smith Anderson Community Fund has reflected a culture that is committed, caring, and compelling," said Byron Kirkland, Smith Anderson’s managing partner. "Through the fund, our lawyers and staff have supported organizations that strengthen the communities where we live and work. Legal Aid of North Carolina is an important part of that story, and we are grateful for the essential work they do to expand access to justice."

The firm also recognized the importance of continued support for Legal Aid at a time when the organization was facing significant funding challenges. In 2025, the organization experienced significant cuts in year-over-year funding, resulting in difficult decisions, including closing multiple offices, primarily in rural communities, and reducing staff.

Joining the summer associate class and firm leadership in celebrating the occasion were representatives from Legal Aid, including Ashley Campbell, CEO; Elysia Prendergast, managing attorney of the Raleigh Beacon Point office; Allison Constance, director of pro bono programs; Scheree Gilchrist, chief innovation officer; and Missy Hatley, chief development officer.

In addition to Legal Aid of North Carolina, the Smith Anderson Community Fund has supported more than 70 local nonprofit organizations, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and Neighbor to Neighbor.
