Smith Anderson partner Robin Tatum has been named to the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly Real Estate Power List, which featured a write-up highlighting her influence and leadership in zoning and land use law across the state.

With more than 35 years of practice, Robin advises clients on the full spectrum of land use matters, from entitlements and rezoning to quasi-judicial and legislative approvals and related litigation. She is frequently called on to resolve complex development disputes across North Carolina, particularly those involving layered regulatory and political considerations. Clients and colleagues value her practical judgment and steady counsel on high-stakes zoning issues, and she is equally respected for her long-standing commitment to mentoring the next generation of land use attorneys.

“Helping younger lawyers build confidence, develop their skills and find their place in this field has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career,” Robin said.

Robin’s impact extends well beyond individual matters. She served on the four-member drafting committee responsible for developing Chapter 160D of the North Carolina General Statutes, which modernized and unified the state’s zoning and land use laws for the first time in more than a century. She has also served as counsel of record in numerous appellate cases that have helped shape zoning and land use principles statewide.

In addition to her private practice, Robin has held significant public service roles, including serving as City Attorney for Asheville and Raleigh, where she advised local governments during periods of rapid growth and complex legal challenges. She is also recognized for her leadership within the North Carolina Bar Association’s Zoning, Planning and Land Use Section.

Robin’s work and leadership have been consistently recognized by leading legal and business organizations. She is ranked in Chambers USA for Real Estate: Zoning/Land Use and was named a Triangle Business Journal Women in Business Award recipient in 2025.
