A Sixth Power List Honor Reflects Byron Kirkland’s Leadership and Impact
Business North Carolina has again recognized Smith Anderson Managing Partner Byron Kirkland among the state’s most influential private-sector leaders, naming him to its 2026 Power List for the sixth consecutive year. The honor reflects Byron’s outstanding track record as a corporate lawyer, firm leader and advocate for a strong workplace culture rooted in collaboration, client service and community engagement.
Byron, who has more than 35 years of experience as a corporate lawyer, advises clients on private equity transactions, mergers and acquisitions, securities and general corporate matters. He also maintains an active venture capital and private equity fund practice, representing funds in formation, investments and portfolio company transactions, and he regularly counsels both emerging and established companies on strategic growth and capital-raising initiatives.
Since being elected managing partner in 2020, Byron has led the firm through a period of continued growth, expanding the team to more than 170 attorneys and strengthening its presence in the Triangle’s business community. Under his leadership, the firm has earned repeated recognition as one of the region’s best places to work, while also expanding its commitment to community engagement through initiatives such as its annual Day of Service and long history of supporting local nonprofits through the Smith Anderson Community Fund. Byron also serves on the boards of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, NC TECH and the Miracle League of the Triangle, further reflecting his focus on culture, collaboration and meaningful community impact.
In addition to his recognition on the Power List, Byron has received numerous other honors reflecting his leadership and client service. He is ranked as an Eminent Practitioner by Chambers USA, recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® across multiple corporate and transactional categories and has been named a “Lawyer of the Year” in several practice areas. He has also been recognized by Triangle Business Journal with Corporate Leadership and CEO of the Year Awards, and by BTI Consulting Group as a Client Service All-Star.
