Caryn McNeill and Craig Wheaton Speak at the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools Business Officers Conference

Raleigh, NC (December 15, 2011) Smith Anderson partners Caryn McNeill and Craig Wheaton recently spoke at the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools Business Officers Conference about current developments for 403(b) plans, a specialized retirement plan often maintained by tax-exempt entities, governmental employers, and churches. The program included a review of the changes in design and operation that have resulted from the final 403(b) regulations, a discussion of plan design and fiduciary issues, and a recap of lessons learned from the initial round of 403(b) plan audits. In recent years, the Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service have greatly increased their compliance efforts as to 403(b) plans, and the program included a discussion of these developments and how an employer can minimize its risks while continuing to offer this valuable benefit.
