Smith Anderson Bolsters its Technology Group with Prominent Technology Founder, Engineer and Lawyer

Ed Roney led Inc. 500-listed company to significant sale

Raleigh, NC, July 24, 2018 – Smith Anderson announces the hiring of Ed Roney, an intellectual property lawyer and successful entrepreneur, as the newest member of the firm’s Technology practice group. Ed brings a broad range of experience to the firm, including IP licensing and IP litigation, U.S. and foreign patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, M&A IP due diligence, freedom to operate opinions, inter partes review proceedings, and corporate transactional support. Ed will also assist the firm’s Start-Ups team and growth company clients with IP needs and portfolio management.

Ed’s extensive professional background includes degrees in Electrical Engineering and his core technical expertise includes software, telecom and wireless. His experience extends to other areas spanning from mechanical and industrial applications to business methods and e-commerce. Prior to his legal career, Ed founded PrairieComm, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company that provided baseband chips and software to leading cellular headset manufacturers. After growing the company to 450 employees and ranking as one of the top 25 fastest growing companies in America on the Inc. 500 list in 2000, Ed led the sale of the company to Motorola. In 2001, Ed was named by The Wall Street Journal to the Unstrung 25 for leadership and contribution to wireless communications.
