As Director of Strategic Communication and Government Relations, Crystal works on a broad array of political, legislative, regulatory and communications issues.
Crystal is Smith Anderson’s chief communications and media relations consultant. Communications services provided include anticipating, identifying and responding to emerging issues and situations; composing and executing strategic communications plans; managing crisis communications; and responding to media, public and government inquiries. Crystal organizes and executes press conferences, media availabilities and public events on behalf of the client. She also manages social media, digital advertising and website campaigns.
As a registered lobbyist in North Carolina, Crystal serves as an advocate for a diverse portfolio of clients before the state’s executive and legislative branches of government. In addition, she advises on policy, political activity, message development and legislative strategy.
Prior to joining Smith Anderson in 2017, Crystal served as deputy secretary for communications at the N.C. Department of Transportation where she led the agency’s internal and external communications. She was responsible for the strategic development, integration and implementation of a broad range of public affairs activities; media relations; and public awareness and education campaigns.
Prior to joining NCDOT, Crystal was deputy secretary for public affairs at the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). She similarly worked in communications at the N.C. Department of Public Safety and the governor’s office. Her previous experience also includes serving as press secretary for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources and communications consulting in Washington, D.C.
Crystal earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Georgetown University.
