Merrill Mason Judges Start-Up Contest Among Students at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School

Raleigh, N.C. – In September 2013, Merrill Mason judged a concept competition among students in the Business 500 course at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. 

Students in the Business 500 course spent weeks developing their ideas. The best ideas were presented to University peers and rated on a scale of 1-10. Merrill, the head of Smith Anderson’s Start-Ups practice, was called upon to offer his perspective on the viability of each concept. He provided further advice on what road blocks each idea might encounter and how those obstacles might be overcome. The exercise simulated what the students might experience when introducing an idea to the market and it taught them how an entrepreneur can overcome challenges by knowing what to anticipate on the front-end.
