Gov. Cooper Appoints Smith Anderson Attorney Phil Cardinale to N.C. Board of Science, Technology and Innovation
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has appointed Phil Cardinale, a technology and intellectual property attorney and partner with Smith Anderson, to the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology and Innovation (NCBSTI). As a state-authorized advisory board administered by the Office of Science, Technology & Innovation at the North Carolina Department of Commerce, NCBSTI encourages, promotes and supports scientific, engineering and industrial research applications in North Carolina.
The board is focused on accelerating North Carolina's next generation of technology and technology companies by investigating emerging science and technology areas and conducting studies on the competitiveness of North Carolina industry and research institutions in these fields. NCBSTI works with the N.C. General Assembly and Gov. Cooper to put into place the infrastructure that keeps North Carolina on the cutting edge of science, technology and innovation.

Phil joins the board as an accomplished leader in the science and technology fields, having held leadership positions in several intellectual property and technology-related professional organizations, including as an American Bar Association Liaison to the World Intellectual Property Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, and has chaired two ABA copyright committees and vice chaired a trademark committee. Phil is also recognized by the North Carolina State Bar Board as a certified Trademark Specialist.
Phil leads Smith Anderson’s Intellectual Property group and focuses his practice on advising technology-centric companies on the management, development, commercialization and protection of their intellectual property and technology assets. He has broad experience in intellectual property rights asset management, transactions, litigation and counseling in matters that involve trademark, trade dress, copyright, privacy/publicity rights, e-commerce, social media and design law.
