Professional Summary

Mr. Smith is a trial and appellate lawyer. He has significant experience in business disputes, trade secrets, environmental litigation, Superfund risk management, pharmaceutical development litigation, preliminary injunctions and temporary restraining orders, and with matters designated exceptional and complex, and assigned to the North Carolina Business Court. He also represents insurers and others in administrative proceedings.

He both prosecutes and defends claims, and advises clients on business risk management in a variety of areas.

Mr. Smith has tried numerous lawsuits to jury verdict. He obtained his first multi-million dollar jury verdict on behalf of a client in 2002. More recently, he was engaged as lead trial counsel in a complex matter involving the corporate form on the eve of trial, and, in another recent trial, obtained an award of treble damages for the firm’s client in an unfair business competition case.

He has argued appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Mr. Smith was an associate with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton in Washington, D.C. before joining Smith Anderson in 1995.
