As of May 7, 2013, all employers must be using the new, revised Form I-9 issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employers are required to complete and retain a Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of each employee hired in the United States.
The revised Form I-9 was issued in March 2013 and, as of May 7, 2013, only the form with the revision date of 03/08/13 indicated on the lower left corner of the form will be accepted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The revisions to the form include the addition of certain data fields including the employee’s foreign passport information and telephone and email addresses and a change to the format of the form expanding it to two pages (page one is now the Employee Information Attestation section and page two is the Employer or Authorized Representative Review and Verification section).
An employer does not need to complete a new Form I-9 for its current employees for whom the employer already has a properly completed Form I-9 on file.
