The National Law Journal has named Smith Anderson as 280th Largest Law Firm in U.S.

The NLJ 500 is a report of the 500 largest law firms in the United States during the previous calendar year, based on the average number of full-time attorneys. NLJ’s parent company, American Lawyer Media (ALM), sent surveys this year to more than 900 law firms to determine the 500 largest U.S.-centric firms by head count.

Law firms across the nation continued to grow their head count in 2022, especially in the associate and nonequity ranks, even with a slowdown in demand amid financial headwinds that categorized the latter half of the year, NLJ says. This year’s data shows head count accelerated at NLJ firms compared with 2021, rising 3.9% in 2022 to meet and surpass pre-pandemic levels of growth, despite economic headwinds. Additionally, midsize firms in particular had some of the largest jumps in head count, NLJ reports.

Lawyer totals compiled for the NLJ 500 are based on the average number of full-time equivalent attorneys between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2022, or on information available on firm websites and collected on ALM’s Legal Compass database.
