In its annual legal issue, Corporate Board Member magazine ranked Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP, the top law firm in the Raleigh-Durham area.
Corporate Board Member surveyed over 2,000 directors of public corporations in 50 metropolitan areas as part of its fourth annual list. The questionnaire asked directors to select five local firms that they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues.
“What makes these ratings unique is that they’re made not by other lawyers, from afar, but by the people ultimately responsible for hiring corporate law firms, weighting their advice, and paying their attention-getting bills – company directors,” said William S. Rukeyser, editorial director of Corporate Board Member.
Earlier this year, Smith Anderson’s Corporate/M&A and Litigation practices received the highest ranking of any Triangle area law firm by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2004-2005 edition. Its Real Estate practice was also recognized.
“We are honored to be recognized in this way, and are proud that our clients look to us as trusted and valued business partners,” said John L. Jernigan, Smith Anderson’s Managing Partner.
The annual law firm ranking is featured in Corporate Board Member’s July/August edition.
About the Survey
Corporate Board Member surveyed directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ, New York, or American Stock Exchanges. The directors were divided into 50 groups based on the location of their companies within 50 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The 50 cities featured are the top 50 MSAs from the 2000 U.S. Census. Each of the 50 groups received a questionnaire specific to their location that included a list of 20 local firms and two write-in options. To be included in the list, each firm had to practice business, corporate, or commercial law and had to be one of the 20 largest firms in its area by number of attorneys. Corporate Board Member compiled the lists of local law firms, from the list provided or as a write-in, they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues. The top five law firms in each MSA are listed in the magazine based on the number of votes received.
