Smith Anderson Welcomes Four New Associate Attorneys

Smith Anderson, the largest law firm headquartered in North Carolina’s Research Triangle region, announced that four new attorneys have joined the firm as associates. The firm welcomes James Jolley, Dan Rowe, Amelia Serrat and Elizabeth Thomsen.

James Jolley joins the firm’s Corporate group and practices in the areas of securities law, corporate law and mergers and acquisitions. James obtained his law degree with high honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as director of the UNC Law Pro Bono Program and as a comment editor of the North Carolina Law Review. After law school, James clerked for the Honorable William L. Osteen, Jr., chief judge for the Middle District of North Carolina. Prior to attending law school, James taught high school social studies for three years in Wake County, North Carolina. James holds a master’s degree in education from Wake Forest University, and a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he graduated with highest distinction.

Dan Rowe joins the firm’s Technology group, where his practice focuses on technology contracting and licensing, commercial transactions that involve intellectual property or data, mergers and acquisitions of technology companies, and corporate formation and governance. Dan earned his law degree from Duke University, where he served as an articles editor of the Duke Law & Technology Review. Dan graduated from North Carolina State University summa cum laude. Prior to attending law school, Dan worked for Legal Aid of North Carolina as an intake specialist and volunteer coordinator.

Amelia Serrat joins the firm’s Litigation and Real Estate Development groups, where she represents clients in contract disputes, product liability matters, and construction litigation. Amelia earned her law degree with honors from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she served as the pro bono coordinator for the Domestic Violence Action Project, vice president of Women in Law, and symposium editor for the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology. While attending law school, Amelia completed an internship with Chief Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. of the Northern District of Ohio. Amelia obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and women’s studies from UNC-Chapel Hill and was named a Buckley Public Service Scholar.

Elizabeth Thomsen joins the firm’s Corporate and Commercial groups. Prior to joining Smith Anderson, Liz was an associate in the Media and Information Technologies group at Dow Lohnes PLLC in Washington, D.C., and at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP in New York, where she advised on intellectual property and technology transactions. She earned her law degree from Duke University and graduated with distinction from Cornell University.
